Prompt: What was the best thing you ate today? Are you and your family eating different kinds of food? Are you purposely eating “old favorites”? The best thing I ate today was an omelette. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals to cook and typically I like to make omelettes. To start, I took two eggs and separated the whites from the yolks and placed them in two different bowls. Then, I took my hand mixer and whipped my egg whites until stiff peaks formed—this makes the omelet super light and fluffy. Then I took my separate yolks and beat them, with my hand mixer, until they were smooth. I poured my yolk mixture into my egg whites and gently folded the egg whites over the yolks until combined. I put my stove on low heat and put half a tablespoon of butter in a pan. Once the butter melted, I put a handle full of bacon bits into the pan and cooked them until they were crispy. Prompt: What did you do for fun today? Today I read a book. Usually, I would not have thought to read on a long break like this, but I found myself really interested in books a few weeks into quarantine. It all started when my brother walked into the kitchen one morning three weeks ago. He put down a copy of J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone . He told me it was a really quick read and that I should read it as well. So, after my brother finished the book, I picked it up and sat down in the living room and started to read it. I remembered once trying to read the book in third grade and not being able to finish the first page, but this time I found extraordinary interesting. Prompt: What does your neighborhood look like? Are people walking around? My neighborhood has always been quiet. There aren’t many families with young children, most of them are grown. I never usually see children running around the cul de sac on Saturday afternoons or selling lemonade on the side of the sidewalk, instead people walk their dogs and park their cars on the side of the road. But in these few days, my neighborhood has been completely bare. I haven’t seen a single dog walker, jogger, or occasional biker. When I went out to help my mom bring in groceries, I didn't see a single car on the street. It’s so quiet. I haven’t left my house since Sunday when my brother and I went to get ice cream at the ice cream shop across the street from my house. Abstract Underage drinking is becoming ever more popular among the youth of America. In my high school alone the average percent of underage binge drinkers is more than double the national average of 14% . This taboo custom is viewed as a rite of passage among teenagers and is influenced by depictions of underage drinking in the media. The ever growing complaints of a higher drinking age than Europe seem to plague my school's hallways. Asleep to the Dream Historically, America prides itself as a place of freedom and expression. A place where people could live a free, prosperous life for themselves and their descendants. For citizens of the United States, the American Dream is a common value that lies at the very heart of the nation. “The American Dream is the aspirational belief in the US that all individuals are entitled to the opportunity for success and upward social mobility through hard work” (Dictionary.com). But in America, are all individuals entitled to the same opportunities for success? What does it mean to “make the world a better place?” A continuing theme in Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me is the belief in the dream, and the impact of the dream on his life as a man of African-American descent. “A very large number of Americans will do all they can to preserve the Dream” (33). One of the greatest values in American history is equality. Our nation was founded on the idea of all people having equal representation and treatment in the nation.
